3 days on Wavelength with some friends... Just for the fun of it.

Had a fun three days of fishing!

  • Day One: Fished out to San Clemente on Saturday
  • Day Two: Went south to the 43 on Sunday and got Marlin and Dorado and some firecracker Yellowtail.
  • Day Three: On the return trip on Monday we saw very little. Did use up the last of the bait at Catalina for a few Calicos and a passel of Perch. All released.
We were down by the 43 spot on Sunday. Great weather. First John R pulled on a marlin for a short time. It came unbuttoned after 12 minutes or so as he was using just a small bait hook and sardine as we were soaking on a patch of bait at the time. It gave us a big show. He did not even have a leader. Amazing it lasted that long. Did have some girth but was short on the length of the bill. Possibly in the 90 to 100 range.

Trolling nearby to that we picked up a bigger and hearty marlin on the troll that I got to fight to the boat at 24 minutes. Unfortunately the lure had a very short leader and was not taken as the leader man (also short) did not have the ability to grasp it. At 27 minutes the hook finally came free. The marlin was to the boat 2 times and if I/we wanted to kill it we surely would have had it on the boat with the long gaff. I’m okay with the long release even though the guys say it was effectively a “Caught Fish” I will not be submitting a weight slip on this one. One angler on board thought it was big like 180 to 190 ish. I think it was more like 150 to 180 ish. Never know unless killed and hung on the scale. So we are okay with letting them go free. But I do wish I could have grabbed it's bill and given it a pet on the nose.

Then John found a bit of action just a few miles outside the 43 spot. We stopped at a patty that was epic. Dream paddy fishing. The dorado were jumping up and playful even when not hooked! Unfortunately the firecracker Yellowtail were too thick and the guys had a hard time getting picked up by the bigger Dorado. Luckily I got two. A big bull that went 14.5 pounds. And a female a little smaller at maybe 8 lbs. Ron H had a big one to the boat that puked up all the bait/feed/chunkes & his hook right before John was about to gaff it.

Richard loved the mayhem and bouncing the Yellowtails over the rail onto the deck. The Wavelength had a fine day. All fish we kept went on ice right away and John and Ron did an excellent job filleting the fish.

Meanwhile... I missed the KHMT fishing event in Avalon last weekend. AND I missed two local fishing events this weekend (MDRA and CYC). Ooops. This was worth it!
