I wish to be the man my dog thinks I am. - TBT

My Throw Back Thursday post today on FBook needs to be replicated here.  This very cool and very old quote came to mind today...   " I wish to be the man my dog thinks I am. "

This morning I was so happy that he got a full breakfast and stood there the whole time. I had to help him only a little. He is a really good dog. Loved him up and played with him this morning.

Here is a photo of my boy back in June of 2007 when I took in this stray wandering my street and eventually became a dog owner. He has been a very happy part of our family for 6 years 11 months 13 days.

This is the one I used in my Lost Dog flier I posted on all the telephone poles around etc. Eventually the boys were attached.

This is from one of the very few times that Winzer was upstairs in the bedrooms of our house.  (6/2009) He was coaxed up onto the bed by Thomas and I so we could get into Ryan's space and wake up the sleepy head.  Of course the real reason is that Ryan can't get mad at the dog.  No one can be anything but happy with Winzer.  He is such a sweet dog.
It worked.  He did have a happy morning that day!  Thomas is a really good one with animals of all types.  So sweet and emphatic.  Both of them actually. Ryan eventually worked at a dog day care and succeeded due in part to his training with Winzer.

And I was smitten too. He had a Ball Fixation.  Any ball was a target of a very laser like attention. He loved to pay and fetch so much.  It was/is his addiction. GSD's are great!

Good with kids.  Loving and kind with little kids.  He liked to toss the tennis ball to a new person to get a bit of play out of someone new.  His way of making friends.

#germanshepherd

Happy to have him in my life.

PS: have found a source for a dog wheelchair and will get it this weekend.
He suffers from... Canine degenerative myelopathy.   :-(

Dead Fish in Marina Del Rey - News Flash. Not a big deal actually

More dramatic puffery or real facts?

On KNX news radio.  On Channel 7 and Channel 5 and even helicopters getting a news shot.  Thanks to Larry.  Our local bait dock.

I was there Sunday morning just a few hours after the loss and talked to the guys at The Landing where there was “No Bait” sign up for us fishermen. The bait dock had released all that dead bait to float away.  Just one of many typical crowding of fish and Low Ox type event.

I'm reminding you of the very low tide with long heat wave and then those issues were combined with a fresh overcrowded pen of a big wrap of fish by the bait boat, the In-Sein, and they lost the load of fish!  Rather than haul it out where it belonged they dumped it in the harbor.  It floated down A basin.

Simple. But the big load of dead fish dumped into the water at the receiver is then left to bloat and float away into A Basin is ugly. And shocking to the folks who don't know it is just a small kill off of the bait dock.  Because he was Too Successful at finding bait!  So now the news people have a Photo moment. You will have a 20 second News Blip. But no real on the ground reporter to Kick the Facts Loose. Newspapers are not totally dead right?  Well you would think it.   You can't actually get them to take the time to look for the full story.

And there was a heat wave All Week. (I've been sweltering in my office) And there was a super low tide. Heat makes an algie bloom more than normal in the enclosed bayment of MDR harbor. Just a few yards out from the bait dock in the main channel was more bait. And the birds frolicked as usual picking at them that Sunday morning. And the bait boat was out picking replacement bait for his bait biz right in front of MDR Breakwater. The eco system is still functioning. Life is thriving here.

Some "Green" zealots will make hay out of it and claim of "Eutrophication" or blame a phytoplankton "bloom" or something man made so that they can justify great increases of their actions needed and more funding or more "Sky Is Falling" overly dramatic puffery.

If you wanted the real story, call and ask Larry Derr the owner of the bait dock.

Not rocket science here. Not complicated. Just business as usual in the working world of fishing bait.

But first please help to end the “Chicken Little” reporting.  The sky is not falling.  The fish in Marina Del Rey are not all dying off.  Don't re-post stuff on Facebook or Twitter or forward spam emails without doing a little homework to find out that it's not just puffery for dramatic scare the public impact.

BTW, We (in Marina Del Rey Anglers) have a very successful fish husbandry program a little ways away.  To date we have released 93,753 juvenile fish.  That may be a good positive story. But no reporter wants that story.  No dirty laundry in it.

Sincere wishes for tight lines,

Church of the Great Outdoors - Sunday on the Bay

Fishing on a Sunday,

Went out an participated in a little fishing competition with my club.

We started up the Ramblin' at a mellow hour of 8 am.  Went out and there was no bait so we picked up some frozen squid and made do.

It was a little overcast at the start.  But that keeps the wind down and that is a good thing when going out to the Short Banks.   The waters close to MDR were full of boats and life.  The In-Sein was setting up on fish as close to MDR as I've ever seen.  So I snapped a photo.
note breakwater right behind him

I'll share my boat track.  See how you like this.

Our Catch...

We had a lovely day...

Thank you to Bob Godfrey (event chairman) and Jerry Napalitano (fry cook) and Victor J. (co-chair) and All the boat captains that went out in the annual MDRA Rock Fishing Fish Fry event.

Bob's report to the MDRA membership was...
It was a little windy for rock fishing on Sunday but we got enough for the Fish Fry in the Park.  Teams on Ron's Big Mama, Larry's Diver Gent, Dave's diamond Cutter, Keith's Ramblin and Bob's Unreel competed for cash prizes. John Szymura won for heaviest fish and Big Mama won for catching the heaviest bag of  boned filets. Jerry Napolitano's "secret sauce" was used to fry the delicious fresh filets. All the fish tacos you could eat was provided along with salads etc. A special thanks to Coralene for securing a BBQ and picnic table at the Park. Every one agreed we should do this again, soon, stand by for a revised Calendar of events.
SOB

SOB above stands for "Sweet Ol' Bob".  It was so cool to see so many of my fellow MDRA members at the new guest docks in Marina Del Rey. Fun to fry up our catch just after being out fishing.

Thanks for the fun. And Thanks for the little jackpot. My guest missed having the winning fish by just 2 tenths of a pound. Fishing was a little hard as the tides were off. We metered lots of fish but they had lock jaw.

Still it was a great day on Santa Monica Bay.

Fish Wish Granted.

Communed with nature.

Ramblin' out of the slip on Sunday for a Sunset

I took the boat our for a sunset cruise.  Followed up with a nice dinner on the boat.  What pleasant picnicking.

The boat performed well.  A little swell on the Bay but not enough to dampen our enjoyment. Sun setting over the Santa Monica Mountains of Malibu as we turned back and ran in.  Our adventure was long enough to give the Cummins diesel engines a chance to warm up.  I hear that the way to keep them healthy is to use them.  So true of almost everything on a boat.

This season I've been fishing little.  But fixing a lot.  A treatment on that.  A rebuild on this.  A scrub up on that.  Some glue on this.  If you love to tinker on boats then you know what that fun can be.

Wood maintenance...  Murphies soap and oils
Outrigger maintenance...  re-do the tip (welding) and restring (cords and bungies and bits)
Window tracks and cleaning...  Loosing that winter grime build up so they slide
De-clutter the corners and lighten the load.
Refrigerator clean and repair the seal strip.
eg - Stuff fixed and patched.

Just a few more chores to be ready for the season and fishing.  Like an electrical plug to rebuild.

Next items to plan is having the little engines serviced and primed for Catalina trips.  Both the generator and the dinghy outboard will have a check up.  Heck, I'm more diligent about the engines than I am about my own doctor visits.

Okay that is for another post this is Boat centric right now.

But the point is...  I got on the ocean.  I enjoyed a lovely sunset.  I sucked up some quality time with some quality people.  Happy.  ( singing in my head... "Happy like a room with no roof" )

Fish Wish Granted
